While it is vital that the manager sets the stage during the first several days and that the organization provides avenues for socialization, it is imperative to realize that assimilation is a two-way process that lasts for a year or more.

Meeting the right people at the right time during an employee’s development is a huge factor in attracting and retaining a high performing workforce.  New hires must take ownership of and responsibility for their strategic socialization into a new organization.  That means building rapport and developing relationships right from the start.
